Job Summary:
The Vehicle Mechanic and Driver plays a critical dual role, ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely transportation of farm produce, agricultural supplies, and personnel, alongside conducting comprehensive preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on all farm vehicles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate farm vehicles safely and responsibly to transport farm produce, farm inputs, equipment, and farm personnel to designated locations.
- Plan efficient routes for deliveries and pickups, considering traffic, road conditions, and urgency.
- Ensure proper loading, securing, and unloading of goods to prevent damage and ensure safety.
- Adhere strictly to all local traffic laws, regulations, and company safety policies.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles, including checking fluid levels, tires, lights, brakes, and other critical components. Report any defects immediately.
- Maintain accurate logbooks of journeys, mileage, fuel consumption, delivery times, and any incidents.
- Represent the farm professionally during pickups and deliveries, ensuring courteous and efficient interactions.
- Implement and execute a regular preventative maintenance schedule for all farm vehicles (e.g., oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations, brake checks, fluid top-ups) to ensure their reliability and extend their lifespan.
- Accurately diagnose mechanical and electrical issues in various farm vehicles and select light farm machinery using diagnostic tools and practical experience.
- Provide immediate response for roadside assistance or field breakdowns, performing necessary repairs to get vehicles/equipment operational quickly.
- Identify and request necessary spare parts for repairs and maintenance. Manage a small inventory of essential spare parts, ensuring availability.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE).
- Minimum of one year of proven experience as a professional driver.
- Minimum of 2 years of practical experience as a vehicle mechanic, with a strong understanding of petrol and diesel engines, electrical systems, and general vehicle maintenance.
- Valid Nigerian Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Solid understanding of vehicle diagnostics, repair procedures, and preventative maintenance practices for various vehicle types.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and work in various weather conditions.
